well one of the original ideas that made computers interesting to me way back in the 80s was flight simming.  I bought my second computer a Commadore 64 in the mid 80s and quickly found flight simulator at that time being published by sub logic.

I’ve enjoyed flight simming over the decades since off and on.  In the mid 90s it was on a pc for the first time and also by Microsoft for the first Time. I soon upgraded to a 285 then on to a pentium several years later always play flight sim, I had even invested in to a ch pro serial yoke along with my thustmaster flight gear, stick, throttle and pedals.  I still have all but the throttle as I sold it along the way but in today’s computers that hardware is useless, no way to connect even with a game board that doesn’t fit the slots of today’s motherboards.

Back after my motorcycle accident I returned to simming.  I built a computer just to run ms fsx.  It is housed in a Lancool tower, model PC-K60 case.  The framework is a AS Rock Z77 motherboard with 16GB DDR3 RAM, a EVGA GeForce GTX 680 video card with 4GB RAM.  It’s powered by a Cooler Master 850W PSU which is dead right now just got a RMA number late yesterday.  The CPU is an I7 Intel cooled by a Cosair H55 Liduid CPU Cooler.  I’ll be sending the psu in for repair next week.  It has Blue ray optical drive and two hdds.  Those will be repurposed in the rebuild.  As I’m plan on adding two SSD drives for the OS and the other for fsx.  Iirc the hdds are a 1 and 2 TB drive.  The 2 TB will be used as a library drive and the 1 TB for photos and plan on an addition 1 TB out of one of my nases for movies and music maybe or use it for a document drive.  I have three Asus 24″ LCD monitors mounted on a triple monitor stand so to upgraded to a 6 monitor stand and I’ll add a TV to the lower LHS, a Sony 24″ 3D PlayStation monitor the the lower center and a hp 23″ to the lower rhs spot. The three Asus will form the top row.  The TV for for viewing television when computing, the Sony will show the main panel and the hp the other panels as needed.

Since 2012 I’ve gotten the following Saitek panels for flight simming along with their pro flight yoke with throttle quadrant, an additional throttle quadrant, and rudder peddles plus Cessna trim wheel.  I have two radio panels and might add one more along with a tpm panel maybe.  I have the bip, multi and switch panels also.

Off eBay I just ordered a 20 switch plug and play diy kit for even more switches.  I eventually want to have a switch or tactile control for each event in fsx.  Starting off with what will be needed to fly the dhc-6 twin otter.

I’ve mounted the Saitek hardware to a pro wheel stand for portability with in the Rv.

Well right now the desktop is down and my simming is on one or both of my hp dv7evy laptops.  I’ve been researching building a simpit as I’m not planning on a full fledged cockpit in the future since I don’t have the room in the Rv.

I’ve gotten the ugtafs from I just got his three bible set plus if r bible also.  I’ve been searching various other blogs and posts which gave me the idea to start mine up again adding simming to it.
I highly recommend the ugtafs for the info contained in it.  I’ve learned a lot of great info about computers from it and I have a degree in microprocessors and microcomputers that I got back in the early 90s.

Then you get into the fs9 and fsx specfics chapters, then the fs hardware, tweaking the OS fo each fs as well as tweaking the fs itself.  And I’m not half way through it yet.  Yet done anymore than browsed thru the other books that I just received this week.  I also have the book “flying ms fsx as in the real world.”

I plan on setting up the simpit I aw the ugtafs and finally learning to fly and communicate correctly using the real world book and other real world flying guides.  I’m not a good candidate for a pilot licence because of health reasons so as real as it gets will be as close as I get.

Until next time when I hope to have the tower back up and running if I’m lucky if not I’ll give a over view of the first flying lesson in the real world book on the laptop using a joystick if not the simpit it depends on several things.  Bye

Been a long time since I wrote anything but that’s about to change

I’m doing several thing with my computers some related to photography . Most of it is one way or the other. I’m rebuilding my network to make the most of the three different nas that I have actual there four but I’m not sure how the apple one will work out. I will tell you about them in the order I got them. First was the Net Gear Stora. Next came the apple time capsule. Then the Buffalo quad ?. Just recently I got a Synology unit it holds two internal and has two usb3 ports for external drives. I like the last unit and the buffalo unit the most the offer among other things a iTunes server plus other apps let’s call them. The Synology unit has something that im was interested in for the surveillance module.

Also I’m going to be working on my photo library using Lightroom cc and photoshop cc. Lightroom will organize smog other things. I also use HDR ? And on ones perfect photo suite. I hope to give details on using a central master library in lr and temp catalogs on laptops and how everything is setup what hardware is used and how.

I also have another personal project. I’m going to try to write my own version of the old photobyte program. I’m wanting to modernize it using vs6. Which is the 1998 version of the software iirc.

Plus ant photo trips or sass shoots I go to. If I can first find all my go pro stuff and get it to work I will wear it while im shooting and place down range in a safe place to get some unique views of what we do. I will also use it for some bhs ( behind the scenes) of some of my photography stuff from shoots to gear packing to tutorials of some of the gear like my quantum Qflash and elinchrom Quadra lites.

So hopefully this will get better or at least informative here in the future. Plus some articles for my other board which will be educational material for photography. The bhs stuff here the tutorials there.

Also will be doing stuff around the Rv from figuring out where every thing will be stored out of the way unlike now where there in the way most of the time. What I’m going to do is position my pelican cases and the pack Rubbermaid bins and drawers for the bedroom in the living room and kitchen items will be stored in the cabinets provided. Hopefully the bins will not have to be stored in the loft just fishing gear, and leather working tools and supplies. Now the shop will have a second table a 8 ft if I still have it and can get it the bins will go under it and the current table. But a walkway will be kept clear unlike now where everything was throw back there while I was in the hospital that I’ve still not completely fixed. One thing is the bins will be used to limit what I keep on the RV. By limiting the number of bin ti ome for some item two max for any sets of items. Some can be stored in the pass thru basement storage area and maybe an overflow bin or two might go I. The front area designed for a generator but mines in the back of the truck so two sets of batteries plus other gear are hosted in there currently.

So as you can see there is a lot that needs done plus some fun items will be written about hear. If I ever start RVing around more that will go here or a new blog . But right now I’m ok where I’m at the winter are quite mild now to find a summer location . Plus I’m wanting to visit my family in charleston sc and outside Athens ga. If I go in the next couple months it be me the dog and the truck and what I can fit in the truck because the Rv will be staying put with several friends watching it while I’m gone.

Well basically this is my life coming up. I not sure if there will be a schedule or if it is as it happens. But if I do something I will write about it. Have a safe All Hallows’ eve(Halloween) next week.

I’m in the design phase of developing an app similar to PhotoByte but the database will be much better

leave a comment »

I’m in the beginning steps of designing an app for the pc(at this time) that will track your gear, photos and hopefully your paperwork. I am taking info learned from using the PhotoByte.

The first phase will be to design an front end app that will connect to a database ( local access database at first then hopefully a way to migrate to a full SQL database later).

This app will allow you to add, edit, and track your equipment at first. Next ill add the paperwork trail to the program. Then hopefully add a database of your photos with links to normal XML data and exif info but also links to all paperwork that relates to this photo such as releases, sales contract, use agreements etc.

Once all this is working I will ask for useful additions to the app.

Three a years running, I’ve be Hospitalized every spring for the past three years

In march of 2011 I had my kidneys shut down, in the haze from it I broke my nose and two bones in my right foot. I came 20 minutes short of going on dialysis. I was hospitalized in Athens Regional Hospital in Athens Ga. Since I want able to assis with the intake some of my meds were switched on me I believe. Reason for the period is was coherent in the hospital and two days after I was hearing conversations that were not there. After two days being on good food my standard meds except what they dropped believing they were the cause of the kidneys shutting down. The voices faded and I became myself again. Two weeks later or so I was back on the road heading west to shoot the regional at Founders Ranch.

16 March 2012 I’m heading to lunch on my Harley and enter a curve and the front end started shaking really bad slow down straight line brake ended up in the other lane where a car saw the problem slow but didn’t stop I I ended up hitting it and totaling my bike and earn myself another trip to the ER. This time the damage was lt femur broken into three pieces, lt knee broken in two places, lt tibia and left fibula, plus my nose and bunch of road rash.

I spent most of the past year healing and rehab off and on. The lt leg gives certain problems while the right foot has it own set of problems. Match that with my back and neck I’ve got a whole lot to strengthen and work I can accomplish most of the tasks that I desire.

Now Friday before last, I woke up and felt like I just played the supper bowl and stanly cup as the ball and puck. Ny lt leg felt like the knee and the lower leg were both in vices. My right foot had two toes in bad pain. The big toe was hurting around the fusion area and the whole second toe was aching and discolored . My back was hurting, same with the neck. Even my scape was sore all over. I figured I got the flu and rested up over the weekend. Monday things were better except for the second toe which wasn’t looking good. Called the VA Clinic here in Alamogordo and was told to come in for a nurses walkin. I did the nurse elevated it to the new doc and she put me on some antibotics and told to fast and return on Wednesday morning which I did.

That appointment had several thing happening after checking in I start having a severe pain in the area of my heart. So they hooked me up to a EKG but they had no reference at this time. The new doc explained that there was a good chance I could lose the toe. She called in the old doc and he looked at it and said it looked like sausage. They got together and farmed me out to the ER at Albuquerque VA where podiatry could look at it. So I was told to head to the Abq va ER ASAP which turned out the next morning because of stuff that had to be done so I might be gone fore a while, pay lot rent, find someone to take care of the dog, and packing what I think I might want while I lay in a bed for a week. Then ihad two appointments that afternoon. But Thursday am I took off for ABQ. I got there around 1pm iirc. Showed up at the ER and they took some time to get me in a room but once I did they had to have podiatry and a few other specialities look at me two more kegs, some blood work, plus blood cultures. Around 6 hours after checking in I was finally admitted and another hour I was in a room on the ward. Luckily I was able to eat so they had a tray sent up for me. The next day the teams came by and poked and prodded and asked many questions. This happened everyday even the one I was discharged on. Between Thursday nite and Tuesday early afternoon they dressed the toe daily and pumped me through with not one but two antibotics thur the IV line.i asked Monday mornings session if Tuesday still looked good for going home and was told the toe was looking as good as they wish. During Tuesday morning session the podiatry doc that fussed my big toe stated it looked good enough to let me go home.. That the discharge orders would be coming. Well they arrived around 130 or 2 o’clock. I got the IV pulled and took a shower, packed and got the heck out. Took the stuff from the room to the truck. Went back in got mt travel pay and picked up my meds and supplies for maintaining my toe from the pharmacy.

Two things about staying in a VA Hospital vs staying in a civilian hospital.

1) you get paid from the va hospital for travel instead of having to pay the hospital for there services.

2) the civilian hospitals are all worried about insurance covering the stay and every little item that you receive where as the va hospital are concerned that you receive what care you need no matter how long it takes.

New used camera

leave a comment »

Well I received my new to me, used Canon 7D that I bought on the FM Forums swap shop. It’s not the first used camera I have purchased or will it be my last. The next will be one of the newer Canon 5D mk3s. But, that may be a few months down the road. My next major photo purchase will be a Canon EF100-400L lens. I’ve got some radio triggers to pay for on the first to add to my arsenal.

I’m starting a new blog just on photography over at I plan on walking thur the proper use of a camera then in to lighting a subject then who knows.the exact format has not been set yet, but I’m thinking of keeping this as my dairy of sorts. If there is something photographic related it will be posted there after the first of February and ill link you to it here. Everything else will be posted here.

No more motorcycle post since I’ve destroyed my bike back last March. But, hopefully ill start shooting again and traveling more. I’ve found if I have something to do each day it helps me find a purpose to getting out of bed, something I’ve not been doing much since March.

That’s it for today, ill post some shots from the camera and why I chose it later this month.

My Workflow for Post

leave a comment »

Well I’m running way behind in doing my post processing from SASS’s End Of Trail World ( EOT) Championship Match where I attended under a media pass in exchange for donating the images I shot.

One thing that needs bringing up is that I’m still recovering from a motorcycle accident that broke my left leg up. Check back to March for the details. It took a lot out of me and my stamina isn’t where it should be. I started importing and culling right after the event but decided today to start from scratch. Why has it taken so long? Well after seeing everyone having fun at EOT, I felt I was up to shooting a match the following weekend. That was the first of July. I managed to survive 4 out of the 6 stages. Long story short it took a week before I was able to walk and feel like I was human again.

Now some things to do before culling the images. Setup the Wacom Intuos Tablet for each stage of Culling and editing in Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS5.
Stage (1). Flagging the images. I set up the top four buttons on the tables to do the following:
Top button – it sends the ‘P’ key to select or pick the image which gives it a white flag.
Second button – it sends the ‘X’ key to reject the image and give it a black flag.
Third button – is setup to advance to the next image or you can use the wheel
Forth button – go back to the previous image or you can use the wheel

Now that we have the Wacom’s functions for Lightroom setup we need to save this info by using the Wacom File utility. I name it stage 1 Lightroom settings.

Next we set it up for stage 2, this is where set the color label. I use the four top buttons and set them up to match keys 6-9 the color labels. I use the following labels, people, animals, sports, and landscapes. Now using the Wacom File Utility to save this setup as Stage 2.

Next we set it up for Rating the images. The top button is used to increase the rating of the image and the second button is used to decrease the rating. Save this as Stage 3.

In Lightroom set it up to auto advance to save time.

Next we insert the CF card in the reader for coping the images from the card. I use several of the presets in the import window to rename the images and convert them to Adobe’s universal format, I also add generic keywords that apply to the images like location and subject. I also add my contact and copyright info to the images at this time. I also make a second copy to a separate drive. This drive is either a external hard drive that later copied or dumped to a network folder or if time allow I save it directly to this network folder.

After importing the images to Lightroom, I copy the CF card to a CD or DVD directly. Then I copy these folders to a network folder on a different drive than Lightroom copied to. So now I have my raw images in five locations the two Lightroom used, the network drive I copied to, the CD OR DVD and the CF card. Once I verify the data in Lightroom, the folder Lightroom used and the folder I copied to I store the CD/DVD I can format the CF Card in the camera.

Now we can get to selecting the images we will work with and deliver to our client.

I go select all the folders for the event by holding down the shift key after selecting the first folder then selecting the last folder it highlight all in between. I load up my settings for Stage 1 on the Wacom. I go through flagging the keepers and rejectings those that are not to standard.

Then we switch to stage 2 for the Wacom and assign color labels for the keepers. This gives use a second look at the images to see if we missed something during stage 1.

We select stage 3 for the Wacom and bump up the ratings on the ones that I’m liking and we go thur the images over a couple of times to rate the images. Once we get to our select images I stack similar images together. Once I’m done with stacking the images I compare each stack bumping the rating until I end up with the best starting image of the group or stack.

The final selects will be the ones I’ll take to the develop module. I’ll go ahead a publish this now and send out updates to it if needed. This is the beginning of my post production workflow. Next time we will cover the Develop Module and any correction additions o the library module.
